Founded in 1953, and the world leader in the production of atomized steel and iron powders, Hoeganaes Corporation manufactures and distributes ferrous metal powders to casting, brazing, photocopy, chemical, EMI shielding and metallurgical industries in the United States and internationally. The company provides iron powders, atomized unalloyed steel powders, atomized low alloy steel and metal powders, ancorsteel phosphorus alloys, and brazing powders. Its products are used as raw materials in the manufacture of structural parts, filters, and bearings, as well as in the manufacture of iron-based compounds. Hoeganaes Corporation operates as a subsidiary of GKN plc.

The Gallatin, TN plant began full operation in 1980 with one 45-ton Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) and 3 Annealing furnaces. The original facility had a capacity of 45,000 tons and only made 3 grades. In 2000, the plant completed a significant upgrade worth over $100 million. Currently, the Gallatin facility has a 60-ton EAF with a Ladle Refining Furnace and 12 Annealing furnaces. The current plant has a capacity in excess of 300,000 tons and makes more than 20 base grades.

The video below gives information about the process Hoeganaes uses to make "atomized" iron powder. Note the use of a "chemical based" process. Large amounts of hydrogen gas are used to "atomize" the iron powder produced.
